Sunday

It was a hard race for Toseland as he slipped back at the start, and then becoming embroiled in a 15 lap tussle with fellow Yamaha rider Lorenzo for 11th position. With both riders swapping places, the Spaniard managed to break free as JT hit grip issues in the latter part of the race.

The Briton rode a determined final few laps to hold off the closing pack of Hopkins, Vermeulen and Guintoli to secure 11th position. His points proved vital in allowing his Tech 3 to secure 4th place in the team table and beat the factory Suzuki team.

James commented: "It was a hard race to finish a pretty hard season and while it wasn't how I wanted to finish on a personal note, it was great that I contributed to the team getting fourth by a point. I'm glad I managed to hang on at the end there because I was coming under a lot of pressure. In the first half of the race I was probably a bit quicker than Jorge but I just couldn't make a pass on him stick. I got him a couple of times but I made mistakes and let him back through. One time I put my hand in the air to apologise for a close move going into the first corner, and as I put my hand back for the second corner I missed my braking marker. So I'm annoyed with myself about that. I was in a real fight at the end and I was just struggling for a bit of grip. We tried quite a big change on the set-up and it worked well for the first half of the race, but towards the end I had to ride a bit defensive and make sure I didn't lose too many places. The team deserve to be fourth in the championship this year and I was determined to help them achieve it. Tech 3 and Yamaha have given me unbelievable support in my rookie year and I was pleased to battle right to the last lap to get that result for them. I have learned a lot in 2008, and I'm

Saturday
With mixed conditions for qualifying, the Michelin riders enjoyed a positive session with many of the riders equipped with the French rubber dominating the top half of the timing sheet.
Toseland produced late heroics to claim his second top five grid position in the last three races. The British rider was dropped out of the top ten when he was badly baulked by Marco Melandri at the final corner on his third Michelin qualifier, just as he was poised to elevate himself into the top five.

The problem intensified the pressure on James to improve on his last qualifying tyre. The British rider though kept his composure superbly, delivering when it mattered to surge into fourth place with a best lap of 1.32.518.

This afternoon’s session was the first to be run in full dry conditions after another rain-hit weekend. With minimal time to find a dry set-up and make a tyre selection for what is expected to be a dry race, tomorrow morning’s warm-up session will be crucial for making last-minute tweaks.
James explained: “I’m really happy to be on the second row at the end because I had to pull a lap out under pressure after Melandri had baulked me at the last corner on my third qualifier. I wasn’t too worried because I thought he was going to start a fast lap, but as we came out of the final corner he didn’t really do anything. That was a bit disappointing but I had to deliver on my last qualifier. When you know it is the last tyre you know you can’t afford to make a mistake, and I did the first split nowhere near as good as I did on the previous tyre when I came across Melandri. The hardest part of this track is the first part because of the speed of the first corner and the preciseness of the second corner. Once you have got that section to the fourth corner done, the circuit flows a bit more, but I wasn’t aggressive enough in the early part. I needed to do a 32 and luckily I managed it. I just hope the warm-up is dry because we need to do some work on the dry set-up, but at least I’ve qualified well and hopefully I can get away with them and see how much grip there is. Any less than the second row and it is very difficult because it so hard to pass at this track. I really want to end the season on a high for the team. I’ve had flashes of brilliance and some disappointing results in my rookie season, so hopefully I’ve got one more flash in me tomorrow. It would be good to end on a high and go into the winter positive for 2009."

Friday

The opening day of the final round saw a complete change from the tropical conditions of the previous round in Sepang, with the riders battling cold temperatures and rain. Once again James struggled with rear grip and took some time in the session to settle.

JT summarised: "It was a tough day and we've got to find something to improve because the forecasts are for more rain tomorrow, and I need to find a bit more from the bike. I just didn't have a very good feeling and I'm not happy, but I've got some ideas. In those greasy conditions I just haven't got enough feel from the rear and we need to find a lot more contact with the rear tyre. It feels a bit like riding around on eggshells at the moment. I'm not too far away but I've definitely got to make a step with the direction I think will work. I just need more weight on the rear to give me more confidence. This track is always tricky in the wet. When it is heavy rain, everybody has a respect for the place because they know how easy it is to get caught out. But when it is drying out, it doesn't give more grip, even though there is less water on the surface. People get sucked into thinking they can go faster and you don't get any warning before you get a big slide. This wasn't the start I wanted with tenth place in the championship to battle for on Sunday, but I'm confident we can make some big improvements."
